Welcome to the Institute of Medical Informatics (IMI) at Frankfurt University Medicine
The Institute of Medical Informatics was founded in March 2022 as a unit within the Faculty of Medicine at Goethe University. The institute evolved from the Medical Informatics Group (MIG), which was founded in January 2016, and thus continues the tradition that began in 1975 with the appointment of Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Giere – one of Germany’s leading pioneers in medical informatics – to Goethe University.
Drawing on its expertise in medical informatics, the institute develops and researches solutions to improve decision-making and processes in medicine and to empower patients. Its activities focus on applied research and development projects in various areas of medical informatics, as well as on university-level teaching.
The institute’s research activities encompass the following research groups:
- Medical Data Integration Center
- Digital Health
- AI in Medicine
- Registries and Research Infrastructures
- Care Atlas for People with Rare Diseases
- Software-Based Support for Research Data Requests

The IMI is one of the pillars of the University Center for Digital Healthcare (UCDHC) and serves as the UCDHC’s interface with the Faculty of Medicine at Goethe University in all matters related to research and teaching.
In terms of academic programs, the IMI participates in
- the joint bachelor’s and master’s program in Medical Engineering offered by TU Darmstadt and Goethe University
- the medical program at Goethe University
- the application field Medicine within the Computer Science program at Goethe University.
We also supervise student theses and offer research topics for doctoral projects in medicine at the Faculty of Medicine at Goethe University.
